One of the best things about your wedding is the gathering of loved ones. The people that love you and the people that you love all have some part in the wedding. And as you know, one of the most important roles in the wedding, is the maid of honor and best man. Both people must be there to help in any way possible. Their focus should be for you to enjoy your day the best that you can. As wedding photographers, we have seen our fair share of good maid of honor’s and best man’s to horrible maid of honor’s and terrible best man’s. Here is a guideline from us that you may want to sneak in your maid of honor’s shoe closet and your best man’s beer fridge in the garage.

The maid/matron of honor

  • Assisting the bride with pre-wedding tasks. This includes many things such as:
    • Attending pre-wedding parties
    • Hosting the bridal shower
    • Assisting with the party favors and decorations
    • Coordinating with the bridesmaids for dress fittings
  • Assisting the bride with dress adjustments and continued beautification:
    • Adjusting the brides veil and train during pictures and before walking down the aisle
    • Holding the bride’s bouquet during the ceremony and keeping track of it during events through out the day
    • Bustling the bride’s train for the reception
    • Having make-up and hair products on hand for touch-ups
  • Signing the marriage certificate
  • Possibly being a point of contact for the photographer and assembling the bridesmaids together for pictures when prompted
  • Running errands, calming nerves, making sure the bride is comfortable; i.e. providing water and other drinks for the bride on the day of the wedding
  • Possibly being a point of contact for the photographer, assembling the bridesmaids together for pictures when prompted.
  • Providing a toast at the reception (Most likely after the best man)
  • Watching “Bridesmaid’s”, the movie (And DON’T do that stuff 🙂

The best man

  • Assisting the groom with pre-wedding tasks. This includes many things such as:
    • Attending pre-wedding parties
    • Hosting the bachelor party
    • Assisting with sizing of tuxedos or the like for groom and groomsmen
    • Making sure all groomsmen and ushers know what they are doing before wedding
  • Making sure all ushers know their job and where to sit guests of honor
  • Possibly being a point of contact for the photographer and assembling the groomsmen together for pictures when prompted
  • Handing off payments or tips (from the groom) to officiant and other vendors if needed
  • Signing the marriage certificate
  • Holding the rings during the wedding ceremony
  • Running errands for the groom, making sure the groom is comfortable; i.e. providing water and other drinks for the groom on the day of the wedding
  • Proposing the first toast to the newlyweds
  • Setting up the wedding day hotel room or the like, into a romantic and relaxing atmosphere.
  • Securely storing bride and grooms luggage for honeymoon
  • Transporting gifts from the reception to the bride and groom’s home

It’s a very important duty to be a maid of honor or best man! It all comes down to this… Provide the best possible service you can to the bride or groom so that they can enjoy THEIR day. 🙂

Cheerio! 🙂
